I visited Coventry in February and have just got round to looking at some of my pictures.

The original Cathedral at Coventry was destroyed on the night of 14 November 1940 and it was decided to leave the ruins of the old building standing as a kind of “anteroom” to the new Cathedral, which was built adjacent at a right angle.

The new building was designed by Sir Basil Spence and consecrated in 1962 and, whilst having a 20th Century appearance at first glance, can be seen to follow a very traditional plan.

It is said that to walk from the ruins into the new Cathedral is like walking from Good Friday to Easter Day, and the overriding sense that one gets when taking these few steps is a deeply moving feeling of reconciliation and rebirth.

Here is a shot taken in the Chapel of Christ the Servant, which is a side chapel with clear glass windows, giving views of the outside world, along with parts of both old and new exteriors.

This interior is almost colourless in life and I felt it lent itself to a monochrome treatment. The shot has been cropped, desaturated and sepia toned and slightly softened before framing and resize for posting.

PS – I haven’t posted for a long time – sorry to all my old friends for my long absence!
