The Golden Square Mile is the name of a luxurious neighborhood in the west-central section of downtown Montreal. From 1850 to 1930 upper class families began to migrate out of Montreal's increasingly congested downtown core (in what is now Old Montreal) and settle into the suburbs. This period saw the development of the city's most beautiful residences in the Golden Square Mile, centred around Sherbrooke Street West /rue Sherbrooke Ouest.
The neighborhood had precise borders measuring roughly a square mile: bordering Mount Royal and the Canadian Pacific railway tracks in the north & ending at rue De La Gauchetière to the south; and from av. Atwater in the west to rue De Bleury and av. du Parc in the east. At that time, 70% of Canada's wealth lay in that slice of Montréal. Eventually as the city grew, the downtown core migrated until this is now a part of it, but a lavish legacy of the mansions, churches, and museums remains along rue Sherbrooke.

These are just two of the eight gargoyles that took up residence on the third-floor ledge of a classy early 20th century apartment building on Sherbrooke Street in the Golden square Mile, four on either side of the great portico through which first carriages and now cars gained entrance to the interior courtyard. They have been carrying on a private conversation for decades, laughing at us down below for very few of us think to look up.
