Photography for Beginners - PfB(5)
I picked up photography in high school days and continued in university days. This was shot in 1978 at Canadian National Exhitibition CNE held annually. The Pavillion was crowded because R&B singer Lou Rawls(1933-2006) was singing the number You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine In the background was the world's tallest 553m (until 2007) CN Tower which I visited at viewing deck on another day.

I could not remember what camera or setting was used. But recently I found these Kodachrome color slides and finally today had this scanned. You could see how a beginner's photography looks like in this slide. I had to crop the bottom and left where a person's head and shoulder popped into the frame as I was about to click. In 1970s I read some photography books but was really not as quick to learn about photography as online reading and now TL. I checked today for my warranty card, it was only 1979 after graduation from university that I could afford to buy my SLR Olympus OM2 on my way from Singapore to London.

These days when I am a little disheartened about photography, I would dig out some old photos that I took and quickly slap myself back to reality that I had improved in my visual outlook and sharing photograhs and critiques are a good way to do so. So if you think that the photo did not earn enough smiley points, do not panic. Look at the number of views you get, if it is a high number, it means many people view your photo by at least catching their attention. And treat that as a good start. Remember, some really good photos might have been rated with few smileys. Cheers, bill

Sorry, no photo info. I am still recalling what point-shoot camera was used then, it could be borrowed one.

1978 summer would be my best ever because I bought a VW beetle for C$8000 to travel from East to West coast of Canada and back through USA from Seattle to Boston in 2 months with a friend, pitching tents and camping all over. A great summer of Donna Summer's TGIF & Let's Dance, Lionel Ritchie's 3 Times a Lady and songs on the road.

Bravo et amitié

Hi Bill.
You as a 'graduated' photographer should know, at least by now, here on TL and other photosites, the amount of 'smilies' has notting to do with the quality of the picture.
Just leave your picture for a week, and give daily the maximum allowed comments to different people.
Sit down and watch the result.!
Sorry to say, but for most people it is just a nice chatprogram.
Nevertheless I still like it, haha
Oyeh...Nice looking picture it is. That time I was in Iran, terreble hot.! 57 degrese C. Three months later the Shah had to leave his country, the day before us.!
Best regards, Jan

Bill Laucp, HI. So you have been in this part of the world and my guess was for under graduate program in this beautiful country. What year was your MCE Bill? Excellent OM2 image and interesting note too. Your eye for perspective has always been there from the start. Maybe our chronology of photography interest are somewhat identical as I purchased my fist SLR in 1978, a Canon AE-1. Still have it with me labeled as one careful owner. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi Bill,
Again, another thoughtful valuable input for me.
I am not sure, but the third paragraph is something I am feeling now... :(. Sending you an email.

Regards,
Ramdan.

Hello Bill ,

Cool souvenir , you are bringing me back. have you seen this
version . Perhaps you might prefer the Original (^_^).

The roof here reminds me a lot the 1967 Expo in Montreal ( The Ontario Ontario pavillon.

Looks like we are about the same age. instead of a Beetle , i travelled the seven seas then (^_^).

Cool souvenir . I like the composition , The CN Tower does indicate immediately the location of your subject. Interesting graphism. Maybe lacking a bit of yellows, or warmth. The blue tones are too strong I believe for a cold mood.

Thanks for the memories ,
Regards,
Robert

Well Bill, you are very correct in the difference then till now, but even then you had good instincts. I think your note is wonderful and so very true. We do forget and we must not. I like what this image represents and how you have conveyed thru it, your feelings. Interesting .
Warm Regards
Wanda

Fascinating image Bill. Good enough for a beginner's shot. But you improved a lot my friend, that is the important thing. We all came in this world empty handed anyway ;-)
