Highlights from Lighthouses trail, east-Canada

CW starting top right

1. Street lamp in Pictou, Nova Scotia

2. Port Medway lighthouse -
established on the eastern end of the breakwater in Port Medway harbour, on the south coast, was put in operation on April 1, 1899.
The lighthouse is a square wooden tower, with sloping sides, surmounted by a square wooden lantern, the whole painted white, and is 33 feet high from its base to the vane of the lantern.
The light is fixed red, elevated 31 feet above high water mark and visible 6 miles.

3. Peggy's Point Lighthouse, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
More commonly know as the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, this light is located at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia near the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. It is an extremely popular tourist attraction and has a post office in the tower. The tower is 50 feet tall and the current lighthouse was built in 1915 replacing a wooden structure that had been established in 1868. When I photographed the lighthouse in 1998, recovery operations for the Swissair 111 crash that killed 229 people were still underway, based in Peggy's Cove. The crash had occurred 5 miles offshore from Peggy's Point.

4. Swallowtail Lighthouse, New Brunswick - is said to be the most photographed lighthouse on Grand Manan Island.

5. Fort Point Lighthouse, Liverpool, Nova Scotia -
this lighthouse was decommissioned in 1989. Originally established in 1855, the lighthouse was restored and the land around it developed as the Fort Point Lighthouse Museum Interpretive Park which opened in 1997.
