Identification:
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
* 50 - 70 cm long with a 75 - 100 cm wingspread. Males are larger than females.
* Breeding males have a glossy green head with a yellow bill, white neck ring, chestnut breast, silky grey underparts with a greyish body, and a white tail having central black feathers which curl up.
* Females have a mottled body with an orange bill covered in variable black blotches, providing camouflage for them while on the nest.
* Both sexes have orange feet and an iridescent purple speculum (the colourful secondary feathers of the wing) bordered with white.
* Following the breeding season, males lose their bright plumage and resemble the females for a period of time in late summer.
* Immatures resemble the female.
No more snow storm in the near future, youppie!
