Hello Shutter monkeys,

It is late on Sunday night, just got back from a weekend away. Monday morning will be my proper note writing day. See you then.

Cheers
Tom

OK, Monday morning is here so here is my note.

This was taken at stockers lake in Rickmansworth a favorite haunt of the fantastic Necip (who would have got this much better than I did) I am pretty sure I actually saw him walk past me on the path but it was only after he passed that I realized it was him, soryy Necip I will say hello next time I see you there.

This swan swooped in to scare off acouple of signets who must have been in its territory, it attacked one then went straight for the other. I am sure this is normal behaviour but I have never seen it before. I took quite a few of the attack so this is the first of a seires. I will not post them all just my favorites.

Cheers
Tom

Hi Tom very nice action shot....

it could be much better with a higher shutter speed... here it is only 1/90 ... you can increase iso to have it...

Hi Tom,they say if one want's to have a good bird image then take it in some form of motion,& you have captured this swan doing exactly that, great timing,I may have cropped it a little more from off the top,but that's just me.

good timing and great action shot

Hi Tom! Amazing swan! Wonderful moment. Good take. Great effect. Very dynamic picture. Cheers!

Hi Tom,
Nice shot, I agree a faster shutter speed would have helped but you caught the moment well, I look forward to the next in the series,
another way to speed up the shutter is to drop open the aperture more.
Regards Andy

Hello Tom, great shot of this Swann on the take-off, sharp details and very good exposure, thanks !

Mario

Hi Tom,
this one needs a faster shutter speed, in my humble opinion. Good impression of the action, but to get away with motion blur the background needs to be sharp! Good focus on the head, and an interesting note.
Cheers, John.

Hi Tom, I am critiquing this one having first seen the nos. 2 & 3 in the series. Like some of the others I think this needs a faster shutter speed to work properly as both the subject and the BG are a bit blurred. As you are shooting from about 45 degrees on the front the panning effect does not work quite so well. Still a nice shot though, I fancy I can see the aggression in the body language seeing as you mention his (her?) purpose for landing! Cheers, Dad

Hi Tom, I like the action you captured, but I think you made a wrong choice in aperture/speed combination; f13 gives a large DoF but the downside is a speed of only 1/90", which is too slow for capturing moving birds...
But! Despite this theoretic brabble, I think the sharpness on its head, body and paws is pretty good, which really amazes me. In fact, 1/90" caused a good motion blur on the wings, and it also blurred the reeds as you panned along.
So, conclusion: well done and TFS!!
A pity the water wasn't more still, then the reflection would have played along too.
